Dear fellow industry players,
It started off with unassumingly linking palm oil to heart diseases that were then truced after counter-arguments based on scientific evidences. Then came was the argument that palm oil as a primary contributor to deforestation. Followed by the European Union voted for the revision of the Renewable Energy Directive II regulatory framework to phase-out palm oil from 2021 in favour of soybeans and rapeseed as biofuel materials.
Whilst the cloud is still hanging, the US government has announced importation bans of palm oil against the two world’s largest producers under the pretext of forced labour. These bans are already fueling deep concerns among the global industry players that this ruling may influence other major export destinations such as Australia, Europe and India to follow suit. Of late, there has been a resurgence of anti-palm oil campaigns at school level associated with the disappearance of orang utans to palm oil production. Even though there have been existing legislations to protect and prohibit land cultivation expansion and existing conservation programs, these actions never seem to be enough.
What is clear is the negative narratives against oil palm began after palm oil displaced soybean oil from top spot. Despite being certified to the relevant criteria on GHG emission, biodiversity and labour, the palm oil industry is constantly being pursued and penalized. The industry is beginning to be suspicious if there is a hidden agenda behind all such rulings – a trade wolf in green sheep clothing?
It is in this context that we are initiating ‘The Future-Proofed Palm Oil Summit’ (FPPO) through a virtual format from 23 – 24 November 2021 for the industry stakeholders to unfolds discussions on market, policy, strategy, technology and innovation that could achieve a future-proofed palm oil industry by creating a barrier-free access to all markets; a global benchmark for carbon neutrality practices; an efficient yielding bio-feedstock produced with low indirect land-use change risk; and a model for modernization through technology adoption in resolving labour pains and to end the labour and human rights abuse accusations.
FPPO will also be introducing new and disruptive technologies that impacting the palm oil and palm oil product industries and identify new applications of palm oil for the industry stakeholders to expand their business horizons. Other than providing information and updates, this summit will also serve as an unparalleled platform to bridge collaboration through the business matching meetings that the secretariat will customise for the participants.
